A supportive mother, two aunts and an uncle provided a loving and caring environment that anchored Dawn’s teenage years. At the age of 13 Dawn was introduced to a client of her mother’s photography business who was a recognised petit point and embroidery expert. She provided Dawn with encouragement and techniques which eventually allowed Dawn to become a recognised expert in her own right. During her teenage years her work was exhibited at the Christchurch Winter shows and at the Canterbury Royal shows where she was a regular recipient of excellence awards. Her handcraft work is regarded as outstanding and she has completed many commissioned works for both local and international collectors and clients.

dawn johnston koru awardDawn’s professional career as a hairdresser commenced in 1958 when she was employed by Hyslop’s, a major Christchurch salon. She continued hairdressing for 42 years until 2000.

At various times during her earlier years she did photographic modelling for a number of Christchurch-based manufacturers. This continued through the early 1960s.

She was regularly used as a photographic model for products associated with the cosmetic and hair dressing professions and her image was regularly displayed in trade and fashion publications,

Christchurch was a wonderful place for young people growing up in the late 50s and 60s. The Christchurch and Canterbury economy was expanding and so was the local the social scene, creating wonderful opportunities for young people. New Zealand was defining itself as a nation resulting in an abundant range of opportunities that allowed Dawn to develop close and important relationships that have endured for the rest of her life.
