While continuing her hairdressing Dawn actively worked in the business utilising her talent as its focus was in markets with a significant art and creative component. The business took them on many international expeditions procuring products for the New Zealand, South Pacific and Australian retail markets. dawn johnston koru award

These were challenging years but enjoyable time for them both. The business flourished and was sold in 2004 and this allowed them to retire. Their retirement years have been devoted to voluntary work.

Despite her lifelong fear of falling over she was determined to overcome that fear and in 1983 completed the Manakau City 10km run.

She trained daily for many months and then successfully finished the run without walking or stopping gaining great satisfaction and elation from facing her fears and just doing it.
